My name is Eva, and I live in London with my husband.
Formerly a Theatre Designer and a bookseller, I currently work in a small academic library. Alongside that I draw, write and sew. Reading, good coffee, long walks in nature and a daily yoga nidra practice bring calm and joy to my life.
Studio Hakuro is a passion project, which has grown from my love for vintage and antique Japanese textiles. I enjoy spending time with each kimono or haori jacket that comes through my hands, carefully deconstructing them and assessing their qualities and condition. I am very aware of their histories, the time that has been spent by artisans spinning, dyeing and weaving the silks, then meticulously hand stitching the garment for someone to wear and treasure, often for many years. With the ever increasing westernisation and modernisation of Japan the wearing of kimono has decreased sharply, and many garments are now unused and unwanted. The purpose of Studio Hakuro is to acquire kimonos and other textile pieces which often are no longer in wearable condition, then to rescue the fabrics to allow them to be repurposed. To share their unique beauty and to give them a new life. By buying from my Etsy shop you can have a small (or large :-) piece of cloth which speaks of its culture and history, lets you admire its design and craftsmanship, to work with, or just to collect, contemplate and get inspired by. Over time I have built up a loyal base of regular customers, made up of bookbinders, dressmakers, dollmakers, quilters, textile artists and collectors.
I hope that over time this website will become an archive of images and information, preserving some of the most beautiful fabrics and items which I have come across in pictorial form, as well as sharing some of my own creative projects. I am always happy to answer questions regarding the care and qualities of vintage and antique Japanese textiles to the best of my knowledge.
Take a look around and make yourself at home... and if you enjoyed what you've found why not leave me a comment or send me a message (studio.hakuro@gmail.com), I would love to hear from you.
